Champadevi Hike

Champadevi Hike

There are many beautiful places to visit around Kathmandu.  Due to busy schedule, it might not possible to plan a trip for many days.  But don’t worry, if you want to, you can unwind and indulge into the nature hike around Ktm valley in a single day.  Of course, who doesn’t like to hang out?  There can be many constraints even behind the daily routine.  But, If you have the will power despite, of all those obstacles and hurdles you can escape from this hustle and bustle city  to energize your mind and soul.  The only thing you have to have is will power.  Today I am going to write about one of the best places for a day hike around Kathmandu and that place is not other than Champadevi.

Champadevi is the hill covered by dense forest below Chandragiri and above Kirtipur located  southwest of Kathmandu valley  with an altitude of 2278 meters.  This place is famous for nature hike and religious pilgrimage. Having such features very few travelers hike to this place thus this place is unspoiled and pristine. From this place, one can see the panoramic view of various mountain ranges including the Kathmandu Valley.  This place can be visited at any time.  But, my recommendation  to visit is from Mangshir to Baishakh as a day hike with nearest and dearest for better experience.  Specially nature lover must visit this place. Furthermore, whoever you are (a resident, employee, job holder, students  or tourist) you can visit this place  by separating one day form your daily routine. For a day hike, it is better to go through Hattiban Resort instead of Kirtipur, as this route is very scenic.  For this you can use the vehicle (private and public) from Kathmandu to Hattiban and then your trek starts.  It should be noted that there are no shops on the entire trail from Hattiban to Kirtipur.  So you have to take care of your food yourself mainly water.  There is an extreme lack of water in this footpath, so do not forget to carry enough water in order keep you hydrate for the entire trail. Further, It is advisable to start hike after having breakfast.

Indulging into the Nature

As soon as you cross Hattiban Resort, you feel yourself in a lap of nature.  In the beginning, you have to travel through Salleri (Pine forest) and Kharbari for a while, then you have to hike steep path up till Champadevi.  You will not feel tired due to the geographical views seen during the journey specially the bird eye view of valley.  The footpath is very good but a slight uphill climb can make you tired. It is beneficial to walk slowly.  As soon as you ascend, you will find yourself in the temple premises of Champadevi.  Remember, you will not find nicely constructed temple with boundary as find in other places. Instead, the idol of Goddess (Kali) has been installed in the roofless temple with trident along with other gods in front of triangular cemented wall. This temple has its own religious significance. The residents of Kirtipur, Dalu and Taudaha take Goddess Champadevi as their “ista devata”. Locals believe that this pilgrimage site has associated story with tiger and lord Devi. Every year during the day of Nepali new year many devotees reach this temple to worship Goddesh Champadevi.

Through the Edges of Hill

The main scenic spot of this trail is the area from this temple (Champadevi) to Deurali.  Where you have to travel through the edge of hill.  The view of either side is amazing and mesmerizing   as you can see Ganesh and Langtang himalayan range along with Kathmandu valley in one side and Lush green divers landscape of Dallu, Dakshain Kali, Khokana and Chure ranges in other side.  Truly wonderful joy comes from walking in this place.  If you want to relax and enjoy the natural scenery, you can find suitable grasslands in some places.  These areas are ideal for relieving fatigue, eating breakfast and camping.  The chirping of birds  along with the freshly blowing wind under blue clear sky at top of hill really adds more sweetness to this trip.

After walking for a while, you can reach Deurali. If you go straight from here, you will reach Chhap Bhanjyang. Chhap Bhanjyang is the connecting point of Simpani village, Chakhel deurali and Matchhegaun and Champadevi. Thus, this trail further connect Simpani village, Chakhel duerali to Chandragiri. I heard further this rout is very scenic and can be hiked form Matchhegaun at Kirtipur. Definitely, one day I will hike to this remaining trail from Matchegaun and share my experience with you soon. Keep reading my upcoming posts. For this time we are taking right turn downhill from Deurali to reach Kirtipur.

Downhill hike till Kirtipur

There is a downhill trail and you have to hike down till  Kirtipur inside the dense jungle which is quite difficult.  People having no hiking experience may have difficulty in walking on this footpath specially they will be the victim of  tittering legs.  So, you have to walk each step very carefully to avoid fall and slip. When you walk through the dense jungle, the view of Kathmandu from the open space is so beautiful that you can’t stop yourself to take picture.  The forest can be seen grazing cows, oxen and goats to its lower belt.  Right above the  Kirtipur  the construction site of the national level Adibaashi Museum is located.  However, construction has not started yet.  Let’s hope that this museum will be built soon which will definitely contribute to the development of tourism.  Now after a short descent you will reach Puspalal Park which is a place worth visiting in itself.  From here you can take either private or public vehicle to reach your further destination.

Thus, your short and sweet natural journey of one day ends here with unforgettable memories.

Did you know about Chhap Bhanjyang and Simpani village another perfect one day hiking trial within Kathmandu valley? If not keep reading my posts. I will write my travel reminisces on this rout.
